Our Growing Practices

Our growing practices center around soil and ecosystem health which lead to high vegetable nutrition and quality. Some practices that we employ include:

-
Compost mulch spread on top of the soil surface to reduce weed pressure and increase food for the soil microbes
-
Minimal soil disturbance
-
Cover cropping to feed the soil microbes and keep the soil covered with living plants in between cash crops
-
Floating row cover for pest control
-
Encouraging flowering plants in and around the garden area to encourage beneficial insects to visit and help with pest control
Organic Certification
Wild Fern Farm is USDA certified organic through MOFGA Certification Services and The Real Organic Project.

Bakie Farm and the Bakie Farm Initiative
Wild Fern Farm is located on leased land at Bakie Farm in Kingston, NH. Bakie Farm is a historical dairy farm which was purchased by the current owners in 2018 and the Bakie Farm Initiative was started. One aspect of the initiative is to give farmers an opportunity to farm the land and use the farm’s infrastructure and equipment for their own prospective farming businesses.
Bakie Farm is currently home to two vegetable operations, Wild Fern Farm and Hungry Heart Farm as well as the flower farm Bakie Farm Flowers. The three businesses lease and share the farm land, equipment and infrastructure. You can learn more about the Bakie Farm Initiative here.

Meet the farmer
Liz Willey grew up in Hampstead, NH and studied environmental science at UNH. She first caught the farming bug when working in Paraguay as a Peace Corps volunteer in an agricultural community. She has worked on three vegetable farms in New Hampshire since 2015 and in 2021 she started Wild Fern Farm.

Liz appreciates the potential farming has given her to positively care for a piece of land and produce healthy, nutrient rich vegetables for people.
Liz met Oso the dog as a puppy in Paraguay and she has been his caretaker ever since. Oso is great at hunting rodents and can be found at the farm when the weather is nice in a sunbeam or in the shade.
